Winter Solstice

The word solstice comes from the Latin word sol “sun” and the word sister “to stand still” translating to mean “sun standstill.” The Winter Solstice is the first astronomical day of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere.  Ironically the Northern Hemisphere is closer to the Sun during the Winter and farther away during the Summer months.  Because the Earth is tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees it leans the farthest from the Sun during December causing colder temperatures.  At the Winter Solstice, the sun travels the shortest path to reach the Earth resulting in a day with the least amount of sunlight and the longest night.  Although this seems like a bad day, the solstice actually lasts for only a brief moment when the tilt is far away from the Sun.  On this day most of us are longing for a bit more ‘sunshine’!

While the Winter Solstice is the day with the shortest amount of sunlight and longest darkness in the night, it’s also a turning point.  It’s the moment when we start to move to longer, warmer, and sunnier days.  It’s a turning point to start to focus on brighter times ahead. It’s a time to look forward.  After all the past is the past and can’t be changed.  Forward-thinking is a practice for success.   Are you a forward-thinking organization or one that is somewhat stuck in the past?  Now is the perfect turning point to embrace technology and all the benefits it brings.
